The Dambadeniya project area represents an ancient kingdom which was ruled by three kings. During this period the development of cultural and literary activities of the area reached its zenith.
The Dambadeniya project area covers entire Dambadeniya electorate, is located in the Kurunegala district of the North Western province which is the third largest of the 24 administrative districts of Sri Lanka. It is located 93 km north east of Colombo. The climate of Kurunegala district is tropical and rainfall is received through two monsoons, via the North East Monsoon between October and December and South West Monsoon between March and June. Agricultural cultivation patterns follow the monsoonal rainfall.
The extent of land in the Dambadeniya electorate is about 236 sq. km representing 5% of the total land area of the district. As in the district, the land utilization pattern of the electorate too is dominated by Coconut and paddy which occupies nearly 65% and 14% respectively of the total land area. The size of the land holdings can be defined as mostly small holdings. Landless or near landless of families represent about 17% and 28% respectively of the total number of families in the electorate.
About 8% of the population of the Kurunegala district resides in the Dambadeniya electorate and they comprise 23,687 families with almost all of them living in rural area.
About 61% of the population comprises the labour force of the district. It is dominated by the youths 20-34 years of age. Formal educational achievement of the labour force is respectively. The rate of unemployment in the labour force is about 15%. The rate of literacy in the district is about 89% which is only marginally different from that of the whole nation.
Infra-structural facilities and accessibility to various kinds of services improved dramatically in the area. There is reasonably developed transport, health, electricity, water and sanitation, Information and Communication technology and enterprise development.

From 1992 to 1998, all university students in the Dambadeniya electorate were given bursaries. |
